Women's walking winter snow boots. Made in Canada by Capitol Brand company.
These Incredible 1940s-1950s Ankle Fur Boots were handmade by the Canadian Huron Tribe under the Capitol Brand sometime between the 1940s and 1950s. Capitol is also known as The Indian Slippers Mfg Co. Who specialized in hand making Womens slippers, Moccasins, Apres Ski attire, and outdoor footwear. Capitols footwear was built equipped to deal with cold weather.
A sheepskin shearling lining creates a cosy interior to keep your feet warm during wear, whilst an outer deer hide offers further protection from the elements with beautiful blonde fur. They were also known to use seal-hide. While im unsure of the composition of the fur/hide used for this particular pair (I assume caribou deer), the fur is 100% real fur and high quality.
A thick crepe sole keeps this pair durable against conditions and slip resistant, with an easy tie up fasten to easily slide this pair on and off. These Mukluk ankle boot slippers would have been fashionable for after ski lounge wear (apres-ski boots).Outer: Sealskin and Reindeer hide. Generous fit: Marked size 7 but fit up to a snug 8.5. Brush lightly in pile direction to maintain outer layer. Per the curator of a website for the history of Canadian fashion, he states, I have a few notes about Capitol Brand in my Canadian shoe research. I found them listed in 1950 (but they were not in the 1938 directory, so they were probably founded some time after the war). They advertised in 1963 that they made hand-sewn moccasin slippers, apres-ski boots, and outdoor shoes under the labels Capitol Brand, and Running Deer. They closed or were bought out by someone else some time between 1963 and 1978, as there is a different company at their address listed in 1978.
The condition of these fur boots is amazing. Look new and hardly worn... Fur is of high quality, very soft. Hide is 98% cover with original fur. Right shoe has a very small area (1 in length) close to upper stitches on back of heel where fur is thin.
There are no scuff marks, and no wear to the leather heels or soles. Inner lining is clean and intact with wear minimal to none. Label with Indian graphic reads Capitol, made in Canada, fabrique au Canada Size 7 in Red. Based on style of shoe, I would date these between 1945 and 1960. Most likely made in the 50s.
In todays fashion, they may be better described as ankle boots, booties, high-top or Chukka Boots. Please message with any questions or commentary regarding this item!
